GRP Gets Ready for Summer Nationals
STREAMING INSTRUCTIONS BY USROWING CAN BE FOUND HERE
Domestic racing is in full form this July, with the Senior and U23 GRP travelling to Camden, NJ for Summer Nationals/Senior Trials. With this much of a team presence at the regatta, there are a lot of Cedar Sprigs to watch. For all parties involved, though, the racing kicks off with Time Trials in all events tomorrow, July 16th.
The U23s will lead the team with the first races of the day. This new group of U23s has been at the center for a few weeks training and tuning up their sculling with Coach Alex Spaulding, GRP Alumna, with the goal of making waves at this race. The U23 Men will do the honor of leading the charge, with Caleb Nollenberger and Thomas Monahan in the U23 2x. They will be followed by some recent returners from U23 World Championships, Will Legenzowski and Simon Hatcher who can’t get enough summer racing it seems. The last of the GRP boats to start will be Evan Albers and Salim Onbargi. These crews will need to finish top 18 to progress to the Semifinal. Their Time Trial starts at 8:00 AM EST.
The Women’s U23 2x Time Trial starts at 8:22 AM EST. The two women’s crews we have entered will be starting far apart among the 42 entries. First will be the double of Megan Lee and Catie Castle who will be looking to hunt down the crews ahead of them. Later in the event will be the start for Simone Vorperian and Brooke Alexander. This race is guaranteed to be a competitive one. These two doubles will need to finish top 18 to progress to the Semifinal.
The next race for the GRP U23s will be the Women’s 4x at 9:52 AM EST. Charlotte Wiley, Catie Castle, Simone Vorperian, and Brooke Alexander will take on the 15 boat event, where all will advance from the Time Trial for lanes and placement in the Semifinals.
The Men’s and Women’s U23 1x will race next. On the men’s side, George Lawton and Evan Albers will look to place top 18 to progress to their Semifinal. For the women, Megan Lee and Charlotte Wiley look to do the same. The men will begin at 11:40 AM EST, and the women at 12:02 PM EST.
The final U23 race of the day will be in the Men’s 4x. The crew of Salim Onbargi, George Lawton, Caleb Nollenberger, and Thomas Monahan will need to place in the top 18 to progress to their Semifinal. Their race will start at 2:15 PM EST.
As the day goes on, the Senior GRP will come out to play in a series of Time Trials for what was formerly a Trials event, but due to the cancellation of World Championship is another race to put in the books. Even though winning crews won’t be making waves in the Shanghai World Championships, the GRP is bringing our complete concentration to these races.
The Women’s 1x will start off the senior team racing. Emily Froehlich will take her first race down the course representing the cedar sprig with Erin Boxberger following a few spots behind. These two will look to place in the top 18 to progress to one of three Semifinals. This Time Trial will start at 3:15 PM EST.
Next the Men’s 1x will take their turn at 3:31 PM EST. With four entries in this event from the Senior group, the GRP is ready to take names and race hard. Luke Rein will start first of GRP members, followed by Mark Cowenhoven, Jack Reid, and last (but not least) Lucas Bellows. They will all need to place in the top 18 to progress to the Semifinal and continue their weekend of racing.
The Women’s 2- and Men’s 2- will race next, where the GRP will represent with our composite entries. Bridget Schodorf has been training in Princeton with Allyson Baker. These two will progress regardless of the result for Semifinal and lane placement. This race will start at 3:49 PM EST. Webster Thompson will be racing with Nick Ruggiero from Vesper Boat Club, where they have been preparing the 2- for the last few weeks for this race. These two will also progress regardless of the result for Semifinal placement. Their Time Trial starts at 3:59 PM EST.
The Women’s and Men’s 2x will take the next two races of the day. The women will race first, where Emily Delleman and Jen Forbes will be racing in a field of ten boats. They will progress regardless of the result to the Semifinal. Their Time Trial goes off at 4:11 PM EST. The men go next, with Alexander Hedge and Jacob Plihal racing in what will be Alexander’s first race in the GRP colors. These two will lead off the pack of their time trial where they will progress to the Semifinal regardless of result. This race starts at 4:21 PM EST.
The final race of the GRP Time Trials will be the Lightweight Women’s 2x. Grace Joyce and Christine Cavallo will look to progress straight to the final in the 4 boat field. These two had an amazing result at Olympic Trials 1 and will look to bring that chemistry and speed down the course again here. Their race starts at 4:33 PM EST.
