GRP Row Races Head of the Charles

As is tradition for the end of October, rowers from all around the world made their way to Boston for the Head of the Charles Regatta, and the Green Racing Project showed up in form. With 5 entries in the Men’s Championship 1x, 4 in the Women’s Championship 1x, an entry in each of the Men’s and Women’s Club 1xs, and representation in both the Alumni 8+ and the Men’s Masters 8+ (Go Steve!), the GRP showed up in Boston ready to race.

The Saturday racing started with big performances out of our two Club singles, with Jack Reid confidently winning the Men’s Club 1x with a time of 18:15.6, putting him ahead of the next competitor by 21 seconds. Bridget Schodorf took 3rd place in the Women’s Club 1x with a time of 20:37.0, missing the winner by 8.1 seconds. These impressive races demonstrated the GRP’s readiness to perform on the day, and we are immensely proud of these two for their result.

With medals from our first two racers, we then geared up to see our Alumni racing and our Coach Steve’s Masters 8+ take their place on the course. Alexander Hedge took it down with a group of Columbia Alumni, taking 2nd place in the Class of 2020 classification with a time of 16:20.3. Steve rowed with a group of former PennAC rowers (which we won’t hold against him) placing 5th in the Masters 8+ with a time of 15:58.4 and meaning he had the fastest trip down the course of any rower on the team.

The final races with GRP members were the Championship 1x events. First came the Men’s Championship 1x, where a gaggle of GRP Men took a trip down the course. The top performer was Ezra Carlson, who finished 5th with a time of 18:08.9. Next came Jacob Plihal, who finished 8th with a time of 18:16.8 followed closely behind by Luke Rein in 9th with a time of 18:27.6. Lucas Bellows finished in 11th with a time of 18:31.9, with Webster Thompson rounding out the GRP group, finishing 17th with a time of 18:58.860.

The Women’s Championship 1x had four GRP entries. The top finisher from our group was Grace Joyce in 4th place with a time of 19:51.1. The next GRP woman was Emily Delleman in 8th with a time of 20:16.2. The final two GRPers to race were Emily Froehlich and Hannah Fitts, who finished in 11th and 12th respectively, with times of 20:27.4 and 20:46.5.

We are happy to have finally gotten the chance to come together for a big time head race like this, and as always appreciate the opportunities provided to us by the Green Racing Project, the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, and our main sponsors, Concept2 and RegattaSport. Without their support, we would not be able to have unforgettable experiences and opportunities to race some of the fastest competitors in the country and from around the world. Next on our schedule is the Head of the Fish, where a smaller group of GRP rowers will race, followed by USRowing Fall Speed Order, where the entire GRP will get an opportunity on both the erg and the water to stack up against our domestic competitors.
