GRP Row Closes Season with a win at Fall Speed Order

Emily Delleman takes home a win in the 1x at Fall Speed Order

For the final regatta of 2021, the GRP Row group headed down to Lake Mercer to participate in the USRowing Fall Speed Order. The Speed Order is unlike any other event of the year, since it is split up into three parts. First, there is a 6k erg test which seeds the start order for a 2x1900m stake turn race up and down the 2k course of Lake Mercer, where the finish order from that event determines lineups for afternoon 2k races in the 2x or the 1x dependant on finish position. The top 16 heavyweight men and women race in the 2x in seeded lineups (1st place with 2nd, 3rd with 4th, etc.) and everyone below that position races the 1x.

On Friday afternoon the team showed up to pull the erg test for seeding, where the competitors were split into groups alphabetically, with the women testing first in two time slots and the men testing in the second two time slots. Emily Delleman crushed the piece, finishing 2nd with a time of 21:21.4, only 3.4 seconds off of the leader. IN a field of 38 competitors, Emily Froehlich finished 7th with a time of 21:37.6, followed by Grace Joyce in 17th with a time of 22:11.4, Bridget Schodorf in 21st with a time of 22:23.3, and Hannah Fitts in 27th with a time of 22:48.6.

The men erged next, among a field of 44 racers. Webster Thompson finished 6th with a time of 19:06.7, followed closely behind by Jacob Philah in 7th pulling a 19:08.6. Alexander Hedge followed in 20th with a time of 19:32.5, with Jack Reid in 21st hot on his heels going 19:32.8. Lucas Bellows finished 23rd with a time of 19:50.4, followed closely behind by Ezra Carlson in 25th going 19:54.5 and Luke Rein in 26th going 19:54.9. These strong showing on the erg from the GRP women and men to set themselves up for race day.

The format of the morning 1x racing was a 2x1900m Time Trial, so the racers would start at one end of the 2k course, race to the other end, then spin and race back. Out of the field of 33 women racing the 1x, Emily Delleman put down a dominant performance, finishing 1st ahead of the next best finisher by 4.5 seconds with a time of 15:23.8. Grace Joyce finished in a very strong 3rd with a time of 15:31.3. Emily Frohlich finished 9th with a time of 15:54.2, followed by Hannah Fitts in 13th with a time of 16:08.6, with Bridget Shodorf finishing 15th with a time of 16:13.0. This put all of our women in place to race in the 2x race in the afternoon.

The men raced next among a field of 43 competitors in the 1x. Jacob Plihal finished 5th with a time of 14:21.6, 11.7 seconds behind the leader. Next was Ezra Carlson in 9th with a time of 14:24.6, followed by Jack Reid in 10th with a time of 14:26.1. Lucas Bellows finished 13th with a time of 14:30.5, followed by the very close duo of Alexander Hedge in 16th with a time of 14:35.7 and Webster Thompson in 17th with a time of 14:35.8. Luke Rein finished 19th with a time of 14:45.3. Because of people electing not to participate and high finishing lightweights, these finish positions meant all of the men would race in the 2x race in the afternoon as well, meaning all competing GRP athletes had qualified for the 2x races.

The GRP rowers were split up into doubles for an A Final and B Final 2k race based on their finish position in the morning 1x race. Emily Delleman raced with ARION’s Kristi Wagner, Grace Joyce with BRF (former GRP U23) Maggie Fellows, Emily Froehlich with Riverside’s Sera Busse, Hannah Fitts with Vesper’s Christina Pretto, and Bridget Schodorf with ARION’s Veronica Nicacio. Emily Delleman’s double won the A Final with a time of 7:33.3, followed closely by Grace Joyce’s double in 2nd with a time of 7:34.3. Emily Froehlich and her partner finished 5th with a time of 7:52.0. In the B Final, Hannah Fitts and her partner took 2nd with a time of 7:58.6, followed by Bridget Schodorf’s 2x finishing 3rd with a time of 8:04.2.

The men were split into lineups of Jacob Plihal with GRP U23 Will Legenzowski, Jack Reid with Ezra Carlson, Alexander Hedge with Lucas Bellows, Webster Thompson with Saugatuck’s Casey Fuller, and Luke Rein with Vesper’s Nick Ruggiero. In the A Final, Jacob and Will took 2nd with a time of 6:53.3, 2.4 seconds of the leader. Jack and Ezra took 3rd going 6:55.9, and Alexander and Lucas finished 6th with a time of 7:20.1. In the B Final, Luke and his partner took 4th with a time of 7:13.7, and Webster’s double finished 5th with a time of 7:19.2. These finishes concluded the racing at Fall Speed Order and finished out racing for GRP Row for 2021.

With all the results in, major congratulations to Emily Delleman for winning Speed Order for both herself and representing the GRP proudly.

As a team, the GRP Rowers want to thank the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, Concept2, RegattaSport, and Hudson for the opportunities to race and train during such a chaotic year. Without these supporters the team would not have been able to travel, train, and race at the level they did the past year, and the unimaginably huge support from these sponsors has fueled the efforts. They also want to thank Normatec for supplying recovery gear that has kept them fresh and operating strongly and professionally. Here’s to a great 2021 and an even better 2022.
