Relays Wrap Up at Biathlon World Championships

Clare Egan, Susan Dunklee and Jake Brown were all involved in relay racing action at IBU Biathlon World Championships.

Clare Egan kicked off team competition when she combinedwith GRP summer training partner Sean Doherty in the single mixed relay. Clare and Sean both shot well in prone and stayed competitive on the short, fast and furious ski loops. Clare had trouble on one standing shooting stage and had to complete a penalty loop. Clare and Sean finished the race in 22nd place. This competition marked the first time that women raced the last leg of a mixed gender team event.

After a day off, Egan was back on the tracks with Susan Dunklee and Team USA teammates Deedra Irwin and Joanne Reid for the Women’s relay. Susan got the race going cleaning her prone targets the first time of asking. Dunklee made one mistake from her magazine in standing, but quickly compensated by hitting the target with her first spare round. Susan tagged the second leg in 12th place.

Clare Egan raced the penultimate leg for Team USA, and experienced no difficulties on the range, using three spare rounds to hit her 10 targets and avoiding the penalty loop. Clare tagged the anchor leg in 12th place. Deedra Irwin brought the team home in 13th place.

Jake Brown took the second leg for the Team USA men’s squad. Jake was tagged by Leif Nordgren in 15th place. Brown easily downed his prone targets needing no extra rounds to hit all 5. After a quick second loop, Jake struggled in standing, using all three extra rounds and leaving two targets standing. After two penalty loops and a fast final circuit, Brown tagged leg 3 in 19th place. The remaining two legs picked up 4 places and the squad finished the race 15th.

Mass Start competitions will close out the 2021 World Championships on February 21st.  Jake Brown and Susan Dunklee will be the sole GRP and Team USA representatives in these races.
