Period II of American SuperTour racing kicks off on Sunday with the 2022 US National Championships in Midway, Utah. This year’s championships consist of a four-race series, starting with a skate sprint. Following the initial sprint day will be a skate mass start, then a classic interval start, and lastly a classic sprint to cap off the week.

On the men’s side, watch for GRP athletes Adam Martin, AkeoMaifeld-Carucci, and Braden Becker. After many impressive results at the SuperTour races in the Midwest, including a win in the classic distance race by Martin, expect to see additional strong performances this week. GRP summer training partner, Finn Sweet, will also be competing for the University of Vermont.

In the women’s field, be on the lookout for GRP skiers Margie Freed, Alex Lawson, Annika Landis, Caitlin Patterson, and Michaela Keller-Miller. Patterson rejoins the team after representing the US on Period I of the World Cup. The remaining GRP women are riding momentum from Period I of the SuperTour, where Lawson and Freed both garnered multiple top-six results, and are looking to continue their upward trajectory. GRP U23 summer training partners Waverly Gebhardt and Rena Schwartz will be racing for the University of Vermont and Dartmouth College, respectively.

The races will take place at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center, where conditions are shaping up for a week of racing. After variable weather this past week, including rain, snow, strong winds, and more snow, the sun has returned in time to ring in the first races of 2022.

A winter storm has been dumping lots of snow and causing porta pottie issues in the past week leading into the races.
