Roller Skiing in Squaw Valley

Bulgaria represented in the Squaw Valley Olympic sign. Pepa was pretty psyched about this.

Sunday morning’s roller ski turned out to be rainy and cold, but we lucked out this morning with blue skies and mild temperatures. The team went for a 3 hour classic ski starting in Truckee and heading south towards Squaw Valley and Tahoe City. After turning off the busy road onto the Squaw Valley access road we were treated to beautiful views up into the snow covered mountains and smooth pavement on a bike path. We also took advantage of the fully paved golf cart paths around the golf course. These provided some good transitions and felt like skiing on an actual trail. It was a lot of fun poking around the resort, which hosted the 1960 Winter Olympic Games. Eventually it was time to continue on our way and we hopped on the bike path that leads from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City. It was a beautiful path that meandered along the Truckee River for about 4 miles, although it was sealed so smoothly our roller ski tips had difficulty digging in. We wrapped up the ski with a few pickups, and our ritual quick jog and stretch. Training this afternoon will be easy because tomorrow morning we have intervals. I think we have all been adjusting to the altitude pretty well so far, but the interval workout will definitely be a good test of that. More photos of the lake and trail running to come soon!
