A Day in the Life of GRP Snow: Bend Camp Edition

Written by GRP Skier Margie Freed

This year’s training is back in full swing! GRP Ski and Biathlon combined forces to take on an early season camp in Bend, Oregon. It was sweet to get back to work on snow and as a team after our ‘off-season’ of April.

I’ll start off by explaining a day-in-the-life while at camp:

Bend Camp Schedule

6:00- wake up, feel sore, have breakfast

6:35- realize i’m running behind and stomp around frantically gathering my ski clothes

6:45- start driving up to Mt. Batchelor and listen to some good tunes

7:15- apply generous amounts of sunscreen and start skiing. This camp we focused on technique and endurance, with a couple interval and speed sessions sprinkled in

9:30- sunbathe, stretch, eat bars in the parking lot while everyone finishes up their workout, before getting in the van and leaving

10:00- eat a larger snack at home, shower, and rest

12:30- make a lunch of salad and leftovers

1:30- sit down at a local coffee shop with a ‘fun bevvy’ and do some work

3:00- head home and relax again for a short time before getting ready for second workout

4:00- run, bike, lift

5:30- make dinner and shower while things cook

7:00- team meal

8:00- head to gelato with friends

9:30- brush teeth, read, & sleep

While this may seem like a pretty easy schedule, we have to prioritize recovery, training, and mood in our lives to make everything worth it! I won’t lie though, the Bend life was pretty nice with sunshine, good skiing, and happy teammates. One way we enhanced training was by linking up with other pro teams, US Biathlon, and US Ski Team who were also there. This helped us by getting new technique views, refreshing new training partners, and camaraderie for the rest of the season.

I’m glad to now be back in Craftsbury for the summer with a familiar schedule but with more knowledge and fitness I gained in Bend!
